Beekeeping Passage
Studio III | Project Professor - Jennifer Newsom
Completed: Fall 2017
Designed for downtown Minneapolis, MN, this innovative nine-story building reimagines beekeeping to combat the declining bee population in the Midwest. Serving as a vertical beekeeping factory, meadery, and bee education center, the structure aims to enhance community awareness and engagement in bee conservation. With 457+ beehives distributed across green roof terraces adorned with seasonal flowers, the bees can forage on-site. To control bee exits, a mesh netting drapes the building with specific points of exit. The 457+ beehives ensure a year-round honey supply for the meadery. This concept not only addresses ecological concerns but also integrates urban beekeeping, community education, and sustainable honey production in a multi-functional vertical space.
